Choreographer’s Note
In this production of Spring Awakening, each of the principals has a shadow dancer assigned to them. These four dancers are there to communicate what their characters cannot.
In this world, the children are not able to communicate through words because of the oppressive system they live in. You’ll see that music is a form of communication and community between them, but for me, I think dance belongs as another way for them to connect with one another.
Each of the dancers have a unique relationship to the character they represent; sometimes they are there to comfort, sometimes they are there to mirror, and sometimes they are pleading. There is so much left unsaid in this show, and the shadow dancers serve as another look into these characters' minds. ~ Amelia Grace Duval
